About Time!

August 28, 2007 12:40 pm

Now that I’ve finally gotten around to installing Dreamweaver and finding an FTP program (I downloaded Fetch. Mac users, any better suggestions before I purchase the full version?) for my MacBook, there have actually been some updates around here. Namely, H and 2AM Inspiration, and I swear cooler things will be coming soon, once I finally finish backing up my 30GB of photographs by uploading them…

Also, allow me to plug my newest hostee, Alli. Thank you and goodnight.

Stardust

August 13, 2007 9:47 pm

Ashley and I went and saw Stardust tonight; a well timed few days after the hardcore fans and the giggling girls had flocked to it over the weekend. It’s one of my favorite books, and as much as I love integrity, I also understanding needing to change certain elements to adapt a story to a different media and appeal to a different crowd. Ashley hadn’t made it all the way but confessed to have loved the plot so far.

The theater was pretty empty (but 7pm on a Monday, what else can one expect) and mostly young couples and groups of hardcore-looking teens filed in. We sat silent throughout the film, except for a few scattered laughs from Ashley and myself. At the final zoom-out, Ashley turned to me and pointed out that “They did live happily ever after, like you said.” My reply: “Yes but this was a completely different happily ever after.”

As the credits began, the man sitting behind me gave a “What-ever!” and a “That sucked…” floated from the back of the theater. We all stood up and filed out together, leaving no film afficianado behind to watch the credits. One teen offered a “It was better than I expected…” only to receive cold glares from her group of friends. Together we trudged back into the theater lobby, with gripes of “I’ll stick to books from now on.” and “Well that killed my faith in movies.”

Yesterday Matt and I hung around a Barnes & Nobles for several hours trying to stave off boredom, and I decided that I should finally buy a copy of Gaiman’s Fragile Things. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach the F-G section of ‘Fiction and Literature’ because a swarm of teenage girls and their middle-aged mothers had gathered around those shelves speaking loudly of Stardust and how Gaiman absolutely must become a favorite author of theirs.

One girl picked up the new trade paperback of Stardust, opened to the middle and exclaimed: “Tristran?! I’ve always thought his name was Tristan!” The girl next to her, probably a sister, reprimanded: “Always? You just saw the movie yesterday!”

Oh My…

Its official: one of the courses I’ve enrolled in this fall (Color) is being taught by the mother of one of my violin students, who also lives just down the street from me. This could get awkward very quickly.

In other news, I had quite a lovely interview with Picture People in Annapolis on Monday and understand fully that they need to contact my references and their district manager before hiring me. Honestly, I expect a call back by the end of this week, but who knows. The place certainly looked swamped and in need of some love when I went in. And I thought the photo lab in the castle was gross…

Also, the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival was absolutely amazing. I was too enthralled (and sweaty) to take any pictures, but Matt and I have resolved to go every year from now on, so photos will be coming eventually. We saw performances (all wonderful) from Shemekia Copeland, Junkyard Saints, The Bernard Allison Band, Catfish Hodge, Three Dog Night, The Melanie Mason Band, and Robert Randolph and The Family Band, not to mention a harmonica workshop. Everyone there was friendly, etc etc. I bought some beautiful jewelry from these guys, and we ate the best Gyros either of us had ever tasted. All in all: success.

This is My Title

If I had anything worthwhile to say, I promise that I would say it. Lately its been lots of working the same old thing and wondering when school will ever start, and if I’ll actually enjoy school when it gets here (rather than feeling old and out of place).

Tomorrow I actually have the night off and plan on doing nothing short of some reading, some laundry, and some scattered cleaning. See? Nothing exciting to speak of.

Sunday Matt and I are hitting up the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival and Monday I have a promising interview with Picture People. So hopefully, somewhere around Tuesday, there will be stories worthy of the time it takes to type them.
